Rumors of a Crisis
If it’s true that you never forget your first time, our goal for our second edition was to create (once again) an unforgettable experience. For years, cinema has essentially been an event. There is no longer a broadly defined cinema audience, but there is certainly an ever-growing audience interested in experiencing culture firsthand, especially when the offering is geared towards spectacle. The temptation to focus solely on
Our region has been severely tested first by the pandemic, then by repeated floods. However, over the past year and a half, we have realized that the sense of crisis we experience in the streets of our cities is not so different from that perceived elsewhere, in places far from us and therefore not immediately comparable. The perception of a broader, in some ways global, crisis has been strong, and cinema once again has been a powerful medium through which to amplify this listening. We have thus chosen to turn our gaze towards New York, in search of a contemporary voice in the storytelling of people, characters (or perhaps masks), and the city itself, which, even today, is perhaps one of the most reliable litmus tests of the West, economically and culturally close to the United States.
The voice is that of Tim Sutton, a director who has taken on the task of telling the stories of the people around him primarily on an existential level. Not that there was a lack of meticulous work on the aesthetic level, with a search for images capable of associating narrative and directorial devices with neorealistic traits, with an aestheticizing photography that is mutually influenced by that of the great names of contemporary European cinema. The voices are also those of Mexican Miguel Salgado and Canadian Chris Nash, who, more than others, with their works bring to Faenza firsthand the story of human despair pushed to its extreme consequences.
Voices of a crisis that we wish to listen to, analyze, and challenge, having understood that this edition lives on the necessity of meeting. Thus, MEET NOAM is born, the rethinking of the space of the Municipal Art Gallery, imagined not just as an exhibition place but as a true center of sharing in the heart of Faenza, a few steps from the square and the city center’s halls. The Festival, together with the people who organize it, ideally wants to meet the city and the spectators, offering multiple opportunities, from the exhibition to the live podcast, through numerous meetings with guests, scholars, and industry professionals.
Therefore, this edition could not miss a look at the future of cinema but also at that of new generations. NOAM, in its constant commitment to involving younger people, has decided to expand its activities in schools, placing image education at the center of the project. In this context, the new short film competition comes to life, a valuable opportunity to showcase other perspectives and work on a laboratory experience of vision. NOAM LAB thus represents the most significant expansion of our offering and allows the event to start new lines of research.
