A Smashing Edition
The third edition of the NOAM Faenza Film Festival marks the end of the first cycle of a journey we hope will be broad and lasting. Two years ago, we began our reflections by imagining the start of a journey westward that concludes this year with the unprecedented exhibition Western Simulacrum by Emanuele Mengotti. This time, Emanuele doesn’t accompany us on the journey with his films, but with his photographs that highlight all the contradictions the myth of the West carries with it. Along this line, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid opens the Festival and takes us back in the history of cinema and the history of the United States when the allure of bandits (and the stars who portrayed them) still had the power to shape the very idea of a nation.
The classics section pays tribute to three fundamental figures for those of us who love cinema. Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, and David Lynch have been three artists capable of making a difference in shaping the idea we have today of a cinema that is free even before it is independent. Robert Redford was the father of the Sundance Film Festival, an event that largely inspired the creation of NOAM and was a decisive experience for those eager to carve out a space away from Los Angeles. Gene Hackman was a formidable actor capable of giving voice to directors very different from each other, over the decades, ranging from the biggest names of New Hollywood to the early Wes Anderson and beyond. David Lynch changed the history of audiovisuals, from cinema to television, with a disruptive idea of authorship that always went beyond the screen, entering life and vice versa.
However, history is accompanied by the new, and that’s why the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Eliza Hittman: an incredibly powerful and consistent author in her research. The recognition rewards the ability and strength of having decided to tell small, diverse stories, running the risk that they might go unnoticed (not to mention hindered). With her three feature films, Eliza Hittman represents everything NOAM wants to promote, and we see her cinema as the perfect continuation of a research path aimed at new voices.
Eva Victor, Nicolás Pereda, Sook-Yin Lee, Carmen Emmi, Max Walker-Silverman, Oscar Boyson, Ernesto Martínez Bucio, Francis Bordeleau, and Hailey Gates tell with very different trajectories and nuances a common theme, namely the difficulty of living in such an uncertain present where individuals are often asked to remain passive. The desire not to remain silent and to act characterizes many of the protagonists: new, small heroes often secondary to distracted eyes that we are sure will steal your heart after having already taken ours. Voices of a crisis that echo with multiple tones also in the renewed competitive section of NOAM LAB short films, accompanied by the strength of new young selectors in the NOAM YOUTH section.
The cellulose UFO doesn’t land because, as highlighted by Alice Iuri’s beautiful illustration, it helps us not to bow our heads and to look proudly upwards. A propensity not to give up and to fight that adds a ring, the third and largest in the historic center, that of Cinema Italia to present you with an edition that we hope will be remembered in every way as Smashing.
